During the years 2017 and 2018, I was exclusively focused on finishing the writing of my dissertation, which I did in March 2018. The dissertation is titled “No hay reino que no sea newtoniano”: José Celestino Mutis and the appropriation of Newton’s experimental physics in New Granada (1762-1804) and it has six chapters, dealing with the diffusion of Newton’s physics in the modern-day territory of Colombia. Despite that my research is centered on Mutis’ lectures on mathematics, I also study the reception of Newton’s physics via Mutis’ pedagogical endeavours related to medicine and the academic aftermath of Mutis’ lectures in the context of New Granada. I explore this last feature by studying the polemic concerning the Copernican system between Mutis and the Dominicans in the 1770s.

After a linguistic revision made by Lexis Traduzioni, the dissertation was approved by my supervisor and, following Paola Rumore’s suggestions, I sent the dissertation to the external referees (Franco Giudice – Università degli Studi di Bergamo – and Christophe Schmit – Observatoire de Paris –)  for its approval. They accepted it and the dissertation was sent to the Examination Committee. Viva examination is scheduled for the month of December.

I also presented partial results of the dissertation in the paper José Celestino Mutis and the defence of the Copernican system in the Viceroyalty of New Granada, which was accepted by the journal Galilaeana and is going to be published in 2019. Some parts of the dissertation will be discussed in the forthcoming conferences: European Society for the History of Science Biennial Conference 2018 (London – 14-17 September 2018) and Congreso Internacional Ciencia y Nación, a 250 años del natalicio de Francisco José de Caldas (Popayán – 24-26 October 2018).
